Talking Tom Cat is a free app that makes use of the iPad microphone and creates a virtual puppet for you to play with your toddler. Our 2-year-old tester loved the cat, and seemed to ignore that he was repeating her words also. She listened intently to everything we said into the microphone, and asked questions like “What’s your name?” and “Are you happy?” Of course, Tom the Cat obliged and asked the same questions back to her. This app is affiliated with the Montesori method of learning, popularized by Italian physician and educator Maria Montessori. At it’s core, Montesori strives to enable the true learning nature of children through self-directed activity (or so Wikipedia tells us).
