The Best Apps for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch

FAQ “What is an App?”

What is an App?

An app is short for “application,” a program that runs on a computer.  More recently, mobile devices of all shapes and sizes come with the processing power of yesterday’s computers.  That means an “app” doesn’t need a computer with a separate monitor or keyboard to use it.  In many cases, you just need a modern mobile device.

The Apple iPhone was the first  mobile device or “smart phone” to bring apps to a mass audience.  Many other software companies are trying to catch up with Apple, which now leads in providing apps to its customers, similar to how Google is the leader in search on the Internet.

What does an App do?

An app can do almost anything, depending on the type of mobile device, operating system and how the developer has programmed it.  Some apps are simple like a coloring book for kids.  Others are more complex that include 3D modeling, video, or remote access to other computers.  The truth is; even the simplest apps require expertise and hours of work to develop.  And, in the case of Apple, the app needs to be approved before it can be available to the public.

Where can I get an app?  Are they free?

Depending on your mobile device or operating system, you need to find an app that is compatible with your device.  If you have an Apple iPhone or iPad, you can download apps straight to your device at the Apple App Store, or you can use iTunes on your computer to find apps and “sync” them back to your mobile device.  For mobile devices running the Android operating system, apps are available at the Android Market within the phone.   Similarly, phones running Microsoft “Windows Phone 7″ have a marketplace also, only you sync with a program called Zune instead of iTunes.

Confused? There are lots of places to find apps for free or for sale.  Apple by far has the most available apps among all the app marketplaces, with  over 300,000 apps.

How much do apps cost?

One of the best qualities about apps is that they range in price depending upon your use for them.  Games can be as little as 99 cents or even free.  If you are unsure about purchasing an app, many developers offer a free or “lite” version of the app so you may sample the program with limited functionality.
